A few jewellery makes from the last couple of weeks. If there is such a thing as a typical day at Siller and Gowd jewellery, then this is it! 🩶💛There’s a lot more to being an artisan jeweller than just making jewellery - which I do sometimes find frustrating, as that’s all I want to do! 🤣
However, after being a teacher and tied to timetables and bells for many year, I now love being able to organise my own day and fit in other, none work related jobs. As well as being able to eat when I want, that’s a definite bonus of working from home! 🤣

The last 2 years have seen so much change, but the one constant has been my diploma work. Although there have been fraught times and a lot of self doubt - I’ve loved it all. 💙 I’ve learnt so, so much, met lots of lovely people, felt part of an amazing, supportive community and have felt a sense of accomplishment like no other. This time last year I was getting ready to leave teaching, a job that not only had I loved for a long time but was also part of my identity. But sadly in recent years, I fallen out of love with a lot of what the job had entailed.

I had been making jewellery as a hobby for a few years and was close to completing a diploma with the Jewellers Academy, which I had been undertaking along side my final year in teaching.

That summer after school was finished we took an extended, amazing family holiday where I had time to reflect on my good bye to teaching along with the long evenings marking and my weekends spent planning.

When we got back, I moved into my new workshop in the garden, I started building a website, got myself a hallmark and branded packaging - officially declared myself open for business and the commissions started coming in.

It was a scary step, still feels very new and I’m still very much working on the business side of things as well as my skills, but it was the best decision I ever made! 🩶💛

I’m a little bit obsessed with these little huggie earrings - they’re so cute! 🥰 A perfect everyday piece of jewellery, a cross between two of the hardest working types of earrings - a stud and a hoop. 🩶 I slept in mine last night and didn’t even know they were there. 😴 I think I’ll make some other variations of these, I’m thinking tiny squares, triangles and circles with the huggie loop - what do you think?

After barely being in my workshop all week, I got back in there this afternoon and it felt good although nothing really went to plan! 🤣 I had some gorgeous visitors in canine form and then it was time to get on with diploma stuff. I’m waaay behind, so need to try to catch up this weekend. I’m currently making the setting for a marquee stone, and it ain’t easy. The little boat (bottom part of the setting that the stone will sit in) was a fiddly little make. In order to hold it when soldering to the ring shank, I got the faithful ole spud out. Initially I tried with my little torch, but couldn’t get enough heat so had to get the big guns out (look out for the little fire bomb towards the end 🔥)! I got there in the end, although I don’t think it’s quite at the correct angle. One for tomorrow….its wine time now! 🍷 Happy Friday!!

This necklace was a commission for a big birthday from a daughter to her lovely mum! 🎁 ❤️ She wanted something personalised and meaningful, so I sketched out a few ideas and we settled on this toggle design. The circle is set with an aquamarine, the birthday girls birthstone. 🩵 Then the ends of the toggle are set with her daughter’s birthstone, topaz 💙 and her granddaughters birthstone, pink tourmaline 🩷Such a lovely sentimental piece that includes a token from all three of the generations.

A privilege to make, as being asked to make something as special as this always is. 🩵🩷💙

This beautiful ring was a commission from a friend who I hadn’t seen in donkeys. She got in touch and asked if I’d make her a ring, inspired by one she’d seen on my website but with her own spin on it. 💍

I loved listening to Anna’s ideas, sketching them out, making models (cutting up bits of paper to scale, colouring them blue and sticking on a ring band 🤣) and then crafting the ring. 💍

Today I handed over the ring and I loved seeing her reaction. 🩵 I’ve enjoyed every part of making this commission, but one of the best things has been being back in touch with an old friend, and making plans to see more of each other in the future.

I loved listening to Anna’s ideas, sketching them out, making models (cutting up bits of paper to scale, colouring them blue and sticking on a ring band 🤣) and then crafting the ring. 💍

Today I handed over the ring and I loved seeing her reaction. 🩵 I’ve enjoyed every part of making this commission, but one of the best things has been being back in touch with an old friend, and making plans to see more of each other in the future.

I’m Angali, the maker (and all the rest) at Siller and Gowd. 🩶💛 I live in York, and have a little home studio (shed) where I make jewellery. 🔨

I was a primary school teacher until August ‘24, when I decided it was time to bite the bullet and take a career u-turn. I’ve been making jewellery for a few years as a hobby, but after completing a silversmithing diploma in July, it was time to get over my imposter syndrome, call myself a jeweller and set up Siller and Gowd. 💍

My team are the best! ❤️ From left to right there’s my workshop assistant, my head investor and my chief product tester! They all help (and hinder 🤣) in their own unique ways! ❤️

I’m originally from the North East of Scotland (hence Siller and Gowd = Silver and Gold in Doric) but have lived in York for 15 years this year. Times flys and all that! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

These were my makes from the first week of the diploma. There are two techniques involved, firstly reticulation which is repeatedly heating metal to achieving a textured surface, consisting of ripples and ridges. The second technique is Keum-boo which is an ancient Korean art of bonding thin sheets of gold to silver. It’s a really great way of creating a mixed metal piece without the cost of solid gold. 💛🩶

I was given some very special, sentimental jewellery a little while ago. A couple of pieces I’ve barely taken off since the day I received them.

Amongst a bag of costume jewellery there was a little 9ct gold earring, a sort of twisted knot, very 80s! 🪩 It had been kept safe, even though its partner had been lost, no doubt many years ago. So, I set about melting and repurposing the gold to give it a new lease of life. And this little necklace is what was born. I love it so much, and haven’t taken it off since the minute it came out of my tumbler. 🧡 It’s really tactile and every time I fiddle with it, I think of the earring’s owner - I think she’d approve. ❤️

I love remodelling, it’s a road I’d really like to go down. It doesn’t have to be a big project like a gemstone ring (although soon I hope to take on these sort of commissions 💍 ) - simple projects like repurposing single gold earrings, broken chains, or unwanted lockets/necklaces, could give you something new and special - a new lease of life and love to something forgotten or unloved! 🤍🧡

It’s my fascination with circles again, even if I did elongate a few of these to make a paper-clip design. I really loved working with the gold, I love mixing it in with silver. Tomorrow is the first day of my silver diploma with #jewellersacademy
I’ve been tinkering with silver for the last few years but it’s time to dedicate a little more time to it in the hope I can turn it into something a little more than an expensive hobby! 😂🙈

In the meantime, I thought I’d pop this on as my first post on my page. Last weekend my brother and beautiful (now) sister in law got married in the beautiful Perthshire. I had the privilege of making the bride a bracelet she wore on the day! ❤️ I absolutely loved making it and so pleased she loved it too. 💕 If you look closely in the last photo you can see it glimmering on her arm! 💞
